Pacifiction
Albert Serra / FR, ES, DE, PT, 2022 / 165 min.
The latest film from provocateur Albert Serra is a fevered phantasmagoria set in French Polynesia. On Tahiti, diplomat De Roller – still charming but past his best – becomes embroiled in secret political intrigues and neo-colonial aspirations. Native activists resist.
He’s the High Commissioner for French Polynesia, likes to frequent the nightclubs of Tahiti and throws himself into a passionate affair with transgender receptionist Shannah. De Roller is a born smooth-talker who maintains good relations with everyone, while in his various roles – from cultural attaché to representative of French colonial power – winding people round his little finger.
As in Serra’s previous films on libertine aristocrats (Liberté, 2019) and the Sun King (La mort de Louis XIV, 2016), Pacifiction deals with power, in a sensual-phantasmagorical setting. A satire on diplomacy and the illusion of power and how, unnoticed, this can slip through your fingers.
