Planning to make a road movie about the region where Don Quixote roamed, filmmaker Albert Serra found that that landscape no longer existed. Necessity proved the mother of invention: he made the 'making of’ a film that was never made.
Having shot Honour of the Knights – about Don Quixote and Sancho Pancha in search of adventure, but mainly embroiled in dialogues on matters earthly and spiritual – Albert Serra decided to make a road movie, playing in the landscape described by Miguel de Cervantes.
Serra filmed the members of his crew in their hotel rooms, on the road in the van they hired there, discussing, chatting or moving through the landscape of La Mancha today.
The result is a slightly absurd film-about-a-film, with the personalities of the actors and crew – the film family – as its starting point.
