Pink Flamingos
John Waters / US, 1972 / 93 min.
Pink Flamingos had an uninterrupted run at New York’s Elgin Theatre, where Nan Goldin must also have seen the film. John Waters’ cult & shock comedy about a collection of competitive outsiders grouped around drag queen Divine became a figurehead of queer cinema. Not for the faint-hearted.
In the early 1970s – as the promise of hippie ideals went unrealised, and tens of thousands of young men lost their lives in the imperialist Vietnam War – John Waters made a name for himself in the Baltimore underground scene.
