Restored & Unseen: El sur
Victor Erice / ES, FR, 1983 / 95 min.
The second film by the renowned Spanish filmmaker Víctor Erice is a masterpiece. Fifteen-year-old Estrella looks back on the relationship with her father, a doctor banned by Franco. Spanish history as seen through the eyes of a child, with impressive images of darkened rooms and a house marooned in a desolate landscape. The director is in Amsterdam and will take part in a Q&A afterwards.

Director Víctor Erice (1940) will be at the Rijksmuseum on 11 January to give a masterclass on the occasion of the exhibition Rembrandt-Velázquez. Dutch & Spanish Masters. Eye screens two other feature films by Erice in the presence of the director (El sol del membrillo and El espíritu de la colmena) in its Restored & Unseen programme.
The tribute to Víctor Erice is an initiative of Sin Fin Cinema, Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival and Rijksmuseum, in collaboration with Eye, Instituto Cervantes Utrecht and OBA Amsterdam.
