Rietveld Academie: Out of Focus
ResearchLabs 2025: Rietveld Academie: Radical Accessibility-Connecting Bodies
For this year’s Eye on Art-Research Lab, VAV–moving image students present a film program that is loosely connected to the topic of Radical Accessibility - Connecting Bodies, introduced by Rietveld's Studium Generale.

Connected to the term "crip", which has been reclaimed as a liberating identity, akin to "queer," by those formerly labelled as disabled. It is used to challenge dominant norms and prejudices and to oppose systems that exclude. Crip theory intersects with disability, trans identity, race, sexuality, and the environment on personal and political levels.
The participants engage in a free-form exploration of this topic, integrating them into their personal narratives and contextualizing them within their lived experiences. The objective is to delineate the manner in which one might configure the environment in a manner that is conducive to the individual's well-being and bodily comfort within the context of a pre-established world.
The presented works address various aspects of the daily lives of these young people, exploring their experiences and emotions in a thought-provoking manner in both a physical and mental sense. What we see in this young international community is a desire to connect with a cross-cultural humanity in these times of polarisation and exclusion.
This term ‘crip’ is an examination of the pressing necessity for accessibility in art and cultural practices from the perspective of those with disabilities. It underlines the interdependence, mutual camaraderie, and shared responsibility among the diverse bodies or body minds that constitute our society.
