Koolhoven & Simons: Roland Klick Night
Roland Klick’s seventies films Deadlock and Supermarkt achieved cult status, but the work of this Einzelgänger of German film has largely been forgotten. High time then to rediscover his psychedelic Western and gritty urban odyssey.

Programme
Deadlock (1970)
Klick’s psychedelic Western set in no-man’s-land: a dark, nihilistic tale of greed, corruption and codes of honour. Kid stumbles through the Mexican Sierra, shot and bleeding heavily, in his hand a case containing the loot from a bank robbery. He’s found by Charles Dump, a former prospector who lives on the edge of the ghost town of Deadlock and who, together with the sadistic killer Sunshine, wants to get rid of Kid.
Soon it’s every man for himself in a violent endgame of Beckettian proportions, as only one of them can end up with the case. The soundtrack is by legendary Krautrock band CAN!Supermarkt (1974)
A real German cinema cult classic about homeless Willi, who roams the gritty streets and sleazy bars of Hamburg, forever on the run. When he falls in love with sex worker Monika (Eva Mattes, Stroszek), he comes up with a reckless plan for their final, big escape from it all.
This was the first time in the German cinema of this era that a down-on-his-luck protagonist was romanticised like a James Dean-esque outlaw; Supermarkt was also the first film to depict harsh social realities in such a compelling way. Jost Vacano's legendary tracking shots – where the camera really becomes the eye of the viewer – also started with Supermarkt.

Every month, Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinizing the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
