The screenings last until 06:00 when public transport starts running again so you can take that to get to bed. A fortuitous coincidence during this Halloween weekend is that daylight savings time starts at 03:00 so you get an hour extra sleep.

With introductions and relevant 35mm horror trailers between the screenings.

    Monkey Shines (1988, 113')

A trained ape helps a paralysed man with his daily life, but increasingly feels anger well up against his new master. After George A. Romero was forced to accept compromises in Day of the Dead, he stopped working for Laurel Entertainment to gain more freedom which resulted in Monkey Shines. His film adaptation was initially viewed as a radical break from his previous style and themes, which meant its true value was only appreciated later.

Day of the Dead (1985, 101')

Scientists, civilians and trigger-happy soldiers are trapped in a rocket silo desperately trying to safeguard humanity’s future. Things are already tense at the base when a horde of zombies appears outside. Ultimately, everyone is searching for meaning in this, one of Romero's most philosophical horror films.

  • poster Creepshow (George A. Romero, US 1982)

    Creepshow (1982, 120')

Five, semi-serious terrifying tales inspired by the fantastic E.C. horror comics from the 1950s include Stephen King’s scriptwriting debut and feature Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson and Ed Harris as well as a cameo from King.

  • poster Land of the Dead (George A. Romero, US 2005)

Land of the Dead (2005, 97')

Romero’s bombastic conclusion to his cycle of zombie films in which humanity has survived the zombie apocalypse by creating an improvised society. In this sharp satire featuring Dennis Hopper and Asia Argento things don’t go as hoped.

Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinising the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
