Sambizanga
Sarah Maldoror / AO, FR, 1972 / 98 min.
This revolutionary classic (based on a true story) describes the awakening of the Angolan independence movement. Screening in collaboration with Africadelic to mark the 50th anniversary of Angolan independence. 4K restoration.

Sambizanga is one of the few African films in Sight & Sound’s Greatest Films of All Time poll. The captivating, neo-realist classic is set in the weeks preceding the guerrilla war for independence. Domingos, a member of the independence movement, is arrested, brutalised and sent to Luanda’s notorious prison by the Portuguese authorities. Unaware of his fate, Maria and her child search for him from village to village through a syrupy web of colonial bureaucracy.
