Sergio Martino Night
Koolhoven & Simons: Sergio Martino Night
Double bill in the presence of the Italian maestro Sergio Martino and his adventures in the giallo genre, with psychosexual sleaze, serial killers, paranoia, great soundtracks and an insane shoot-out.

Sergio Martino didn’t just bring the Italian western to great heights alongside Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci and Sergio Sollima, he was also the director of six influential ‘giallo’ films. Giallo ('yellow') are adaptations of the popular Italian pulp pockets of the 1960s and 1970s, which had yellow covers.
Maestro Martino
Sergio Martino is present at this show of Koolhoven & Simons. The maestro provides an introduction to both main films and during the intermission there is an opportunity to sign autographs for a cash fee of €25, which cannot be paid by card.
Programme

Lo strano vizio della signora Wardh (Sergio Martino, 1971)
Martino’s first 'giallo'. When an ambassador’s wife is blackmailed, she starts suspecting one of the men in her life – her husband, a sadistic ex or her current lover – is perhaps a cruel serial killer. What follows is creative bloodshed featuring razors and plenty of psychosexual sleaze. Sergio Martino's feverish direction led this to culminate in an insane whirlpool of murder, paranoia and sexual excess with the queen of Italian film, Edwige Fenech in what is perhaps her best role.

The Suspicious Death of a Minor (Sergio Martino, 1975)
The last of the six 'giallos' Martino directed. Police detective Paolo Germi meets the mysterious Marisa in a dancehall, as yet ignorant to the secret this coerced prostitute hides within. When the young girl is brutally murdered, the undercover cop uncovers the trail of a Milanese gang. Martino skilfully combines 'giallo' with elements of the then flourishing 'poliziotteschi' crime thrillers with the added bonus of an amazing soundtrack and an insane shoot-out.

Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinising the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
