Shadows and Fog
Woody Allen / US, 1992
Shadows and Fog is an ode to the German Expressionist cinema. Allen liberally larded his film with allusions to Bergman, Kafka, Fellini, Lang and Brecht, mixing them with his own black humour, philosophy and stylistic jokes. The result is an exquisite and comical lament starring John Malkovich as a clown and Madonna as a contortionist. This summer EYE is devoting a retrospective to Allen’s films.
