Shall We Dance?
Suo Masayuki / JP, 1996 / 136 min.
Reissue of this nineties Japanese classic. A grey office drone overcomes his midlife crisis by following his heart and taking part in a ballroom dancing competition. The romantic drama also tackles the strict codes that dominate social interaction in Japan. 4K-restored version.

He’s in his early forties, happily married, adores his young daughter, owns his own home and has a steady job. But there’s something eating away at the soul of Shohei Sugiyama – one of Japan’s millions of ‘salary-men’.
One day, Sugiyama walks into a dance school, having become fascinated by mysterious dance instructor Mai, who he’s watched from the window of his commuter train. After an unpromising start, Mai decides to bring Sugiyma up to scratch for a ballroom dancing competition, and the two of them form a strong team: the man an overenthusiastic amateur, the woman a dyed-in-the-wool professional competitor who through him rediscovers the joy of dancing.
4K-restoration by the Kadokawa Corporation.
