In her latest film, Kelly Reichardt (First Cow) goes beyond the usual romanticisation of the lives of artists as a tortuous odyssey in search of the sublime. For her protagonist Lizzy, finding a balance between passion and everyday obligations is struggle enough.
Lizzy works on her ceramics in silent concentration; of modest size, her works are nevertheless big in expression. Her art is the opposite of Jo’s, her friend and colleague from whom she rents a modest apartment in Portland, Oregon. Jo is more extravert, more popular, and more nonchalant.
