Small Axe - Mangrove
Steve McQueen / GB, 2020 / 127 min.
Mangrove by Steve McQueen, one of the most significant filmmakers and artists of our time, tells the true story of a group of black British activists known as the Mangrove Nine.
In the late 1960s, Mangrove restaurant, a place where the Caribbean community in Notting Hill liked to meet, was repeatedly raided by the police for no justifiable reason. Community protest led to a violent confrontation with the police, and a number of activists were charged with riot and violent disorder. Racism was a key issue in the controversial trial.
