Bud (Warren Beatty’s screen debut) and Deanie (Natalie Wood, who was Oscar nominated for this role) are in love. In the months leading up to the Great Depression in America. She is from a respectable middle-class family; his family is the richest in town and his father has big plans for Bud, starting with studying at Yale. The boy is smitten by Deanie but dare not disobey his father. Then, after a dramatic event, Deanie crumbles to the edge of madness.
