Story of Floating Weeds, A

Yasujiro Ozu / JP, 1934 / 89 min.

Longer than in the US and Europe, the silent film tradition remained very much alive in Japan. Yasujiro Ozu, the master of early Japanese cinema, fully explored the graphic potential of film without sound. Ukikusa monogatari is a sober and honest portrait of a father wanting to set things right in his untidy life. A Cinema Concert performance, accompanied by the Japanese Benshi (actor/explicator) Ichiro Kataoka, and Martin de Ruiter on piano.
