Scientist Rosetta Stone leads an isolated existence in her undefined cyberspace. Specialising in biogenetics, she creates three self-replicating robots that she cloned from her own DNA. To survive, they require the male Y chromosome, which only occurs in sperm. Tilda Swinton plays four roles: Rosetta Stone, as well as the robots Ruby, Olive and Marine, who only differ as far as the colour of their clothing is concerned.

Pre-film

Prior to Teknolust, you will see De stinkzwam (The Stink Mushroom) by A.M. van der Wel (1925, 4’), a Dutch scientific film with a slightly erotic touch, newly scored by Thijs Havens (Eye). Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye

Lynn Hershmann Leeson is a true cinema visionary. The first film we made together - Conceiving Ada - was the very first ever made entirely within a computer: George Lucas took a look at it during his development of Star Wars. Teknolust brings us Rosetta Stone, cyber-genius, and her three cyber-clones: Ruby, Olive and Marinne (Red, Green and Blue..) and their quest for love, adventure and the ‘real’. Featuring a Karen Black impersonator played by Karen Black and a very beautiful bright green early electric car. Bonkers in all the right ways.
