The Deep End
Scott McGehee / US, 2001 / 101 min.
Can a mother ever let go of her child? Not in Scott McGehee’s The Deep End, a dark thriller about manslaughter, blackmail and the lengths a mother (Tilda Swinton) will go to, to protect her son. Swinton steals the show as Margaret a housewife with an iron will.

Little suggests that Margaret and her teenage son Beau’s ostensibly placid lives will be upended in no time. Nevertheless, nothing will ever be the same again for the comfortable middle-class family when Margaret discovers a body in her leafy garden near Lake Tahoe.
Pre-film
Before The Deep End, you’ll see the short French production Strijd tusschen een kreeft en een zee-polyp (1913, 4’), where it’s impossible to tell if they’re hugging or strangling each other. Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye
A re-adaptation of Elizabeth Sanxy Holding’s The Blank Wall - first made in 1949 by Max Ophüls as The Reckless Moment with Joan Bennett and James Mason. I love this film. David Siegel and Scott McGehee, Lake Tahoe, a virtuous navy wife, a mother’s unconditional love and a very attractive man with a red car and a tattoo of dice on his neck. One of very few ‘classic Hollywood’ narrative films I have had a part in making.
