The Damned

Luchino Visconti / IT, DE, 1969 / 155 min.

Inspired by the family history of the infamous steel magnate Krupp, one of Hitler’s financiers. The Damned shows life behind the façade of big industry: as well as rich, the members of the (Krupp) dynasty prove to be immoral and extremely unhappy. In memory of the actor Helmut Berger who died in May 2023.

When news of the fire at the Reichstag (1933) reaches the aristocratic Essenbeck family, it becomes apparent how the various members view the rise of the Nazi regime. Although the industrialist paterfamilias hates fascism he has allied himself with the Nazi regime to provide steel for their war machine.
