In this intoxicating film compilation, Peter Delpeut moulds clips from Italian diva films into a melodramatic narrative. Première of the digital restoration, with director Delpeut present.

<em>Diva Dolorosa </em>is an ode to an extinct genre that brought unprecedented popularity to female stars such as Francesca Bertini, Pina Menichelli and Lyda Borelli. In the silent diva films of the 1910s, these actresses explored the extreme boundaries of their expressive possibilities, using as their only instrument their own, seductive bodies. The roles, typical of the fin de siècle era, always present archetypes: the femme fatale, the hysteric and the femme fragile. Their story is tragic and runs from euphoria, extasy, punishment and sorrow to sickness and death.

Filmmaker Peter Delpeut dove into the Filmmuseum’s collection and merged archival footage from the early 20th century with a self-penned screenplay about the sole survivor of an expedition to the South Pole.

The result is a compelling adventure film, in which historical silent film footage of the journey to the South Pole plays a dramatic role in a magical story about murder, cannibalism and mystical salvation.
