The Grand Budapest Hotel

Wes Anderson / US, DE, 2014 / 100 min.

Playing a supporting role as the murdered, immensely wealthy, 80-year-old lover of the concierge at the Grand Budapest Hotel? No problem for Tilda Swinton who spent five hours getting her make up done every day for Wes Anderson’s Oscar winning film.

The imposing Grand Budapest Hotel is situated in the fictitious central European country of Zubrowka and is run by the extremely stylish, discreet and decisive concierge M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) and his piccolo Zero Moustafa.

When the incredibly wealthy, elderly hotel guest Madame D (Tilda Swinton) is found murdered in her room, her secret lover Gustave is an immediate suspect, particularly when Madame D’s legacy a famous Renaissance painting ‘Boy with apple’ proves missing.

Pre-film

Before The Grand Budapest Hotel, watch the short French film Le rêve des marmitons by Segundo de Chomón (1908, 6’), in which, in an enchanted kitchen, the hands of the kitchen staff detach themselves from their sleeping bodies and start working independently. Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye

Another deep cover: this time the fantastical Mme D, not a birthday shy of 88. The incomparable Milena Conanero - who designed Kubrick’s films - draped her with real diamonds ‘because we can always tell the difference’. I asked Wes for a cloud of pugs at my feet, but although he says no, as - ample - consolation, he created for me the role of Oracle, the monosyllabic soothsayer pug in his Isle of Dogs a couple of years later.
