The Great Moment
Preston Sturges / 1944 / 83 min.
Preston Sturges’ daring approach characterised this cinematic daredevil. Sturges turned the life story of Dr. W.T. G. Morton, the dentist who anaesthetised his tormented patients with ether into a comedy with elements of drama, told as a flashback.
The pain people must have suffered in the 19th century on operating tables and at the dentist can scarcely be imagined. Boston dentist W.T. G. Morton could no longer stand his patients’ moaning and screams and went in search of anaesthesia. Letheol, a modified form of ether, was the narcotic that provided relief.
