In the 1930s, Preston Sturges had made a name for himself as the author of polished, popular stories that catered in every way to Hollywood’s dream factory. After years of loyal service, Sturges – the first properly paid scriptwriter in the American film industry – decided he would direct. He sold the script for The Great McGinty to Paramount for a mere ten dollars, in exchange for being able to do so.
