The Home and the World (Ghare baire)

Satyajit Ray / IN, 1984 / 132 min.

Satyajit Ray’s adaptation of Tagore’s story of true love not running smooth in turbulent times, when Bengal was partitioned into Muslim and Hindu dominions. Liberal Nikhil encourages his wife Bimala to broaden her horizons, and she falls under the influence of charismatic political leader Sandip.

This was supposed to have been Ray’s first film, before Pather Panchali (1956). The screenplay – about the lives of the upper middle class in Bengal in the years following partition – was finished, but the film proved impossible to finance after Ray refused to compromise with more commercially minded producers.
