The Lady Vanishes
Alfred Hitchcock / GB, 1938 / 96 min.
One of Hitchcock’s most inventive suspense films. Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave search Europe for one Miss Foy, who seems to have miraculously disappeared from the face of the earth. Screening of the 35mm version.

Brits abroad is all the storyline required for an archetypal Hitchcock, full of tensions and subtle humour. “We used a single railway carriage, everything else consisted of projections or miniatures,” the director reminisced. The film’s quality is primarily attributable to the consistent high tempo, sublime suspense (the unfortunate fate of a Tirolean busker for example) and the intelligent use of sets.
