The Man with a Movie Camera
Dziga Vertov / SUHH, 1929 / 68 min.
Astounding montage of urban life in the Soviet Union around 1928. Man with a Movie Camera is still viewed as one of the foundations of modernism in cinema. With live accompaniment by Sebastian Janusz (piano), Yrjänä Rankka (double bass) and Bernt Nellen (percussion).

A cameraman tries to capture urban life in Soviet society, the home of the ‘new humans’, with all its mechanical dynamics. He films Odessa from early morning – when the city sleeps, its wheels, cogs and machines silent – until late at night.
