The Searchers

John Ford / US, 1956 / 119 min.

New 70mm print of the restoration of John Ford’s absolute Western masterpiece. Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) is out for revenge after his brother’s family are murdered and his niece (Natalie Wood) kidnapped; but his epic quest becomes more and more derailed.

poster The Searchers (John Ford, US 1956)
Ethan – a dangerously obsessed, tortured soul – sets off on a seven-year quest to find his missing niece. His thirst for revenge causes him to lose more and more of his humanity. Ethan and kidnapper Chief Scar – caught up in a vicious circle of violence and vengeance – simultaneously understand and hate one another. John Ford’s elusive, controversial Western saga paints a deeply ambivalent picture of both the noblest and the darkest impulses that have shaped US history. No surprise then that The Searchers is included in Sight and Sound’s list of the 15 best films of all time.

Also in KINO Rotterdam on 70 mm.
