The Third Man
Carol Reed / GB, 1949 / 104 min.
Vienna, shortly after the war. A viper’s nest of profiteers and spies. A man on the run. Ominous black-and-white shadows; a chase through the city’s sewers. A pure noir classic, with Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton (4K restored version). With a famous score by Anton Karas.

Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton), a writer of pulp novels, sets off for Vienna at the invitation of his old college friend Harry Limes (Orson Welles). He arrives just in time to witness Limes’ funeral. In his efforts to untangle what’s happened, the bewildered Martins has to wrestle his way through a viper’s nest of black-market traders and espionage: welcome to Vienna on the eve of the Cold War.
