The Village Detective: A Song Cycle
Bill Morrison / US, 2021 / 81 min.
Four, seawater damaged rolls of celluloid from a Russian 1969 comedy, recovered off the coast of Iceland by fishermen and a phone call from composer Johann Johannson were the starting point for this captivating narrative on Soviet cinema and popular actor Michail Žarov.

Was it a long-lost masterpiece? Filmmaker and cinephile Bill Morrison (Dawson City Frozen Time, Spark of Being) shot to attention when Johann Johannsson, an Icelandic composer called him. Johannsson told him that fishermen had netted a curious catch off the coast: four rolls of 35mm film, ostensibly of Soviet origin.
