The Village Detective: A Song Cycle

Bill Morrison / US, 2021 / 81 min.

Four, seawater damaged rolls of celluloid from a Russian 1969 comedy, recovered off the coast of Iceland by fishermen and a phone call from composer Johann Johannson were the starting point for this captivating narrative on Soviet cinema and popular actor Michail Žarov.

Was it a long-lost masterpiece? Filmmaker and cinephile Bill Morrison (Dawson City Frozen Time, Spark of Being) shot to attention when Johann Johannsson, an Icelandic composer called him.
