Who was Shinji Somai? This Japanese filmmaker died young at age 53, but made a number of much lauded films about young people growing up during the 1980s. In Typhoon Club secondary school pupils shelter from a typhoon with the camera recording their fears, desires and passions.
A secondary school in a provincial town just outside Tokyo as evening falls. A typhoon is about to hit and this traps the students. While the storm rages and destroys, one of the kids gets ready to go to Tokyo and disappears. The others cling to each other in fear, giving their bottled up desires, energy and drives free range in a series of dreamlike scenes, featuring powerful physical acting and daring camera angles.
