Van de koele meren des doods
Nouchka van Brakel / NL, 1982 / 120 min.
Film adaptation of Frederik van Eeden’s naturalistic novel about the highs and lows of a well-to-do woman for whom life isn’t kind. Nouchka van Brakel paints a keenly-observed psychological portrait of a woman who literally goes mad due to the lack of freedom in a male-dominated world. Digital restoration.

The emphasis in Director Nouchka van Brakel’s film adaptation of Van Eeden’s famous novel is on the position of women in the patriarchy. Hedwig Marga de Fontayne (Renée Soutendijk) is beautiful, intelligent and well off. Her lust for life focuses on men in her environment, yet neither marriage nor affairs bring her happiness, a morphine addiction sees her end up as a prostitute in on the streets of Paris and, ultimately, an asylum.
