For 13 years Digna Sinke filmed the changing landscape of the island Tiengemeten, simultaneously looking back on the changes in her life. This past summer, the Volkskrant newspaper wrote that Weemoed & Wildernis was the best Dutch documentary ever.
Tiengemeten is situated in the Haringvliet, just south of Rotterdam. Once reclaimed from the sea, made habitable and fertile, in the 1990s it was decided to return the island to nature. In 2006 machines came and removed roads and trees, dug creeks, planted new trees and raised or razed dikes.
The director & narrator picked six fixed camera positions which she returned to film over and over. The changing light of the seasons effect on the Dutch ‘polder’ landscape is beautifully recorded and the latter’s transformation is accurately documented as is that of the director, whose life also changed dramatically.
