Y tu mama también

Alfonso Cuarón / MX, 2001 / 105 min.

This wonderfully spicy road movie by Oscar winning director Alfonso Cuarón was a smash hit. Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna became world famous as two horny teenagers from Mexico City who set off in search of a mythical beach.

Tenoch, a corrupt politician’s son and Julio, a kid from a broken home, spend their days having casual sex and smoking weed. The two horny teens are entranced by an older Spanish woman they meet at a wedding. She agrees to drive them to a remote beach in their borrowed car, yet the paradisiacal Boca del Cielo proves a figment of their imaginations.

The trio appear to experience a summer fling, yet under the surface, director Alfonso Cuarón portrays a crumbling democracy saturated with a sense of lives finality. Funny, moving, disarming, Y tu mamá también is all these things, elegantly shot by Emmanuel Lubezki the cameraman who would later become famous for Sleepy Hollow, The Tree of Life, Birdman and The Revenant.

Screening on 35mm from the Eye collection.
