In this stylish documentary, Sonia Herman Dolz portrays cabaret artists during the final four days before Barcelona’s café chantant La Bodega Bohemia closed down – art as a way of life.
La Bodega Bohemia, the last remaining 'café chantant' in the heart of Barcelona, has to close in 2000. Its owner has passed away and manager Enrique doesn’t have the funds to take it over. Enrique is a father-figure in the red-velvet upholstered club, where a whole gamut of artists – from middle-aged to ancient – have found a second lease of life at the tail-end of their careers.
Yo Soy Asi’s motto is: “Only through art can we elevate ourselves above the pitiable banalities of everyday existence,” after Oscar Wilde. With Yo Soy Así, Sonia Herman Dolz followed up her previous, multi-award-winning documentaries Romance de Valentía (about the art of bullfighting) and Lágrimas Negras (about a European tour by a group of aged Cuban male musicians). She referred to the three films collectively as ‘a trilogy about art as a way of life’.
Screening on 35mm from the Eye collection. Sonia Herman Dolz will be present at the screening on June 30.
