A Clockwork Orange
Stanley Kubrick / GB, 1971 / 136 min.
Kubrick’s masterpiece about an exceptionally sadistic young man is a devastating film adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ Orwellian novel, and unleashed a scandal upon its release. Dick Maas tells us why this is his favourite film of all time.

On the outside, Alex (Andy McDowell) seems pretty unexceptional. He lives with his parents and during the day hangs around, like a typical lazy student. At night, however, he undergoes a terrifying transformation. Then, Alex sets off with his mates, clad in tight white overalls, a codpiece and bowler hat. The group terrorises random passers-by and breaks into the home of a trendy sixties couple.
Dick Maas, subject of a retrospective at Eye, will be attending the screening and telling us why A Clockwork Orange is his favourite film of all time.

In 2026, it will be forty years since the popular comedy Flodder shook up the film landscape. That same year, Dick Maas celebrates his 75th birthday — the perfect occasion for a look back at the work of the Dutch “king of genre,” who managed to draw millions of Dutch viewers to the cinema.
