Dick Maas – Complete & Unfiltered brings all of Dick Maas’s feature films and short films back to the big screen for the first time, alongside a selection of music videos (on 35mm). The programme will be preceded by the premiere of Amsterdamned II, the sequel to Maas’ 1988 canal-thriller Amsterdamned.

In 2026, it will be forty years since the popular comedy Flodder shook up the film landscape. That same year, Dick Maas celebrates his 75th birthday — the perfect occasion for a look back at the work of the Dutch “king of genre,” who managed to draw millions of Dutch viewers to the cinema.

Dick Maas’ Flodder (1986) and Flodder in Amerika! (1992) rank among the Top 15 most visited Dutch films of all time. This highlights one of Maas’s key qualities as a filmmaker: his ability to get audiences excited about Dutch cinema. Flodder, the comedy in which working-class archetypes clash with the residents of a wealthy suburban neighbourhood, attracted no less than 2.3 million viewers.

Maas’ films exist to entertain — and he does so brilliantly — with attention-grabbing short films such as Adelbert (1977) and Rigor Mortis (1981), music videos for the Netherlands’ most successful rock band Golden Earring, the first major Dutch horror production The Lift (1983), Flodder, Amsterdamned (1988), the horror-comedy Saint (Sint, 2010), and later works like Moordwijven (2007) and Prey (Prooi, 2016).

Alongside Wim Verstappen, Paul Verhoeven, Alex van Warmerdam, and Nouchka van Brakel, Dick Maas is one of the defining Dutch directors; with flair, he shaped the genres of horror, comedy, and thriller.

Dick Maas never wanted to be a small, modest filmmaker; he went big, insisting on having full control over every aspect of the production process, from casting and storyboarding to the (synthesizer) music he composed himself. He founded his own film company, First Floor Features, went bankrupt, and got back on his feet again.

Spectacular stunts, finely tuned suspense, and dry, blunt humour became Maas’ trademarks. His unfiltered humour didn’t appeal to everyone: film critics often saw Maas’ comedies as an assault on good taste, but audiences warmly embraced the filmmaker and his actors (including Huub Stapel, Nelly Frijda, and Hadewych Minis).
