American Honey
Andrea Arnold / US, GB, 2016 / 163 min.
Andrea Arnold won the Cannes Jury Prize for her brisk road movie about a partying group of teenagers cruising the Midwest.

American Honey was filmed in Andrea Arnold’s characteristics, lyrical style that she uses to capture harsh reality, as she did previously in Fish Tank and Wuthering Heights. Star (a new face at the time Sasha Lane) lives on the margins of American society when she encounters Jake (Shia LaBeouf) dancing at Kmart and sparks fly. Star immediately joins Jake and his gang of outsiders, who down liquor in vans, sleep at dilapidated motels and sell fraudulent magazine subscriptions. Star and Jake are ecstatic and start dreaming of owning their own home and starting a family.

Britain’s Brightest
Idiosyncratic British filmmakers Andrea Arnold (1961) and Lynne Ramsay (1969) make films like their lives depend on it. Perhaps not in terms of quantity, but certainly in terms of urgency.
