Amores perros

Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu / MX, 2000 / 153 min.

The latest film from Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant), Digger, has its première in October. Iñárritu made his spectacular directorial debut in 2000 with Amores perros: a dazzling, rough-and-ready example of hyperlink cinema telling the stories of three lives in bustling Mexico City. 4K-restored version.

Unemployed young man Octavio (Gael García Bernal) earns some unofficial extra cash by entering his brother’s rottweiler into illegal dog fights. While being chased by a gang of criminals, he causes a serious car accident. The collision puts highbrow model Ramira in a wheelchair, and is witnessed by homeless hired killer El Chivo – a former terrorist – who rescues the rottweiler from the wreckage.

As well as the digitally restored version, Eye – the film’s original distributor in the Netherlands – is also screening a vintage 35mm print.
