An Unfinished Film
Lou Ye / DE, SG, 2024 / 105 min.
Filmmaker Xiaorui aims to get an interrupted film project going again when his crew is placed under lockdown because of the coronavirus outbreak. A fascinating combination ensues: documentary footage and social media images from the lockdowns get mixed up with footage from the unfinished film.

January 2020: filmmaker Xiaorui and his crew arrive in the Wuhan area to continue working on an unfinished project, a poetic film centred around a gay couple – which shows a not entirely coincidental similarity to Lou Ye’s Spring Fever from 2009.
As the crew are preparing to resume work, public life is brought to a standstill owing to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The crew are shut away in separate hotel rooms, they start to unravel in quarantine, and the film too starts to fragment.
Screens to accompany the re-release of Lou Ye’s film Suzhou River.
