A courageous, candid film: Lou Ye (Suzhou River) portrays an obsessive romantic relationship between two students at the time of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, and the subsequent crushing of hope. An atmospheric sketch of modern China and melancholy romantic drama in one.

Attractive dreamer Yu Hong, from a small town in the provinces, is allowed at the age of seventeen to go to university in Beijing, where she finds herself in the midst of the student movement. She falls head over heels for student activist Zhou Wei; their relationship is thrives on sex and political activism.
