This spring, Miles Davis would have turned 100. 32 years after his death in 1991, the genius improvised a score live for the Louis Malle’s classic L’ascenseur pour l’ échafaud. Author, jazz historian and Grammy winner Ashley Kahn will introduce the film.
Miles Davis’ muted trumpet, Jeanne Moreau’s implacable face: jazz and film noir came together here in Ascenseur pour l'échafaud.
Jeanne Moreau plays Florence, the mistress of disillusioned war veteran Julien. He works for her husband a gun dealer. Chaos enters the characters’ lives when Julien, encouraged by Florence, shoots his boss with a revolver.

Author and music historian Ashley Kahn will introduce this film. Kahn has written books on legendary albums including (John Coltrane’s 'A Love Supreme', Miles Davis’ 'Kind of Blue'), record labels and the (auto)biography of Carlos Santana, 'The Universal Tone'. Grammy winner Kahn teaches at the Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music in New York University and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2023.
