Blind Chance

Krzysztof Kieslowski / PL, 1987 / 114 min.

Kieslowski’s early masterpiece shows us various, chance-determined outcomes for a human life. Witek runs after a train. Using this ordinary event, Kieslowski outlines three possible outcomes for the medical student’s life.

Kieslowski shot his first metaphysical masterpiece,Blind Chance, before he made a name for himself with the epic Dekalog series of films and the Trois couleurs trilogy. The captivating drama shows how difficult it is to reconcile political ideals with personal happiness. Witek (the magnetic Bogusław Linda) is a medical student with an insecure future in communist Poland. Kieslowski dramatizes Witek’s life journey as a series of different opportunities, thereby suggesting that our lives are just as controlled by chance as they are by so-called freedom of choice.
