Boy Ecury
Frans Weisz / NL, 2003 / 80 min.
Eye has a programme dedicated to Felix de Rooy, film and theatre maker as well as actor. In this made -for-TV film directed by Frans Weiz he plays Dundun Ecory, the father of an Antillean young man who joined the resistance and was sentenced to death.
It’s a hidden story: the participation of Dutch people with Surinamese or Antillean roots in the resistance against the German occupiers during World War Two. One of these resistance fighters has been added to the so-called ‘Canon van Nederland’: Anton de Kom – resistance hero, activist, author of the iconic study 'Wij slaven van Suriname' [We, slaves of Surinam] and the name Boy Ecury will therefore not be familiar to many.
