Brief Encounter
David Lean / GB, 1945 / 85 min.
One of the most romantic films ever made. How far does a staid housewife take her feelings for another man? David Lean helped actors Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson shine in this tale of impossible love.

Brief Encounter – accurately described by a British critic as the ‘simplicity of true greatness’, and based on playwright Noel Coward’s subtle, intelligent script – brings together serious themes, impressive acting and subdued directing. Robert Krasker, who was also responsible for the camerawork in The Third Man, provided the highly focused, atmospheric black & white footage whilst Rachmaninov’s ‘Second Concerto for Piano and Orchestra’ is put to effective use in the score.
