Burden of Dreams
Les Blank / US, 1982 / 95 min.
Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo – like Coppola's Vietnam epic Apocalypse Now – is a film that really cried out for a ‘making of’. Documentary maker Les Blank followed Herzog to the Amazon, where he was pretty much gifted all the spectacle he could possibly need.

After watching Burden of Dreams, about the challenging production of Fitzcarraldo, you know one thing for sure: no film will ever be made this way again. In the heart of the Peruvian jungle, the German filmmaker proves as obsessed as his protagonist – played by Klaus Kinski – who is having a steam ship dragged through the primordial forest in order to build an opera house in the middle of nowhere.
The screening on July 29 will be preceded by the playful short Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (Les Blank, 1980)
On September 14, Burden of Dreams will be shown with an introductory programme entitled The myth of on-set bust-ups in cinema by Dana Linssen (NRC) and Jan Pieter Ekker (Het Parool). Click here for more information.

With an unorthodox oeuvre of more than seventy features, documentaries and shorts, Herzog has fascinated audiences with unforgettable stories, images and characters for more than half a century. His films grant us insights into the relationship between people and the chaotic world around them, as well as into the endless indifference of nature towards human life.
