De mythe van de vechtset + Burden of Dreams
LES BLANK / US, 1982 / 130 MIN.
The making of Werner Herzog’s megalomaniac jungle epic Fitzcarraldo shows a logistical nightmare in all its jaw-dropping detail. With an introductory programme entitled 'The myth of on-set bust-ups in cinema' by Dana Linssen (NRC) and Jan Pieter Ekker (Het Parool).

Preceding Burden of Dreams, the famous documentary about the making of Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo, art and film journalists Jan Pieter Ekker and Dana Linssen will unravel the myth of the contentious set. Fitzcarraldo is notorious for the extreme conditions during the shoot, lead actor Klaus Kinski’s angry tantrums and the way Herzog approached filming like some sort of survival game.
Burden of Dreams
After watching Burden of Dreams, about the challenging production of Fitzcarraldo, you know one thing for sure: no film will ever be made this way again. In the heart of the Peruvian jungle, the German filmmaker proves as obsessed as his protagonist – played by Klaus Kinski – who is having a steam ship dragged through the primordial forest in order to build an opera house in the middle of nowhere.
