Fitzcarraldo
Werner Herzog / DE, PE, 1982 / 158 min.
Herzog and Kinski condemned to one another again. Businessman Fitzcarraldo wants to build an opera house in the Peruvian rainforest. To reach it, he has a steamboat dragged over the hills. This dangerous feat was really performed for the film.

Peru, the early 20th century: businessman Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, nicknamed ‘Fitzcarraldo’, is crazy about opera, and – in particular – about world renowned tenor Enrico Caruso. He wants to build an opera house for him in the middle of the rainforest. To collect the necessary funds Fitzcarraldo buys aa plot for a rubber plantation and boards a steamboat heading for the jungle.

With an unorthodox oeuvre of more than seventy features, documentaries and shorts, Herzog has fascinated audiences with unforgettable stories, images and characters for more than half a century. His films grant us insights into the relationship between people and the chaotic world around them, as well as into the endless indifference of nature towards human life.
