Frans Weisz / DE, IT, GB, NL, 1980 / 94 min.
Frans Weisz, who died recently, depicts the life story of the German Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon. Her remaining water colours and texts, which she collected under the motto: ‘Leben oder Theater?’, served as Weisz’ point of departure for this poignant film.

At the close of the 1930s, Charlotte Salomon who was born in Berlin in 1917, fled from the Nazis to the south of France. Her father, a surgeon, had already been detained. In 1943, she was murdered in Auschwitz. She left hundreds of water colours and texts, collected under the motto: ‘Leben oder Theater?’. All bear witness to a life on the run cataloguing her fears and fantasies.
