Crimewave
Sam Raimi / US, 1985 / 86 min.
After the enormous success of The Evil Dead director Sam Raimi asked Joel and Ethan Coen, who had just finished their debut Blood Simple, to co-author the script for Crimewave, a deliciously unusual mix of comedy, film noir and an homage to B movies.

The cooperation makes perfect sense: Raimi’s hyperactive visual style is perfectly suite to the Coen Brothers’ stylised dialogues. Later, Raimi would, in turn, act as the second unit director for the Coens’ The Hudsucker Proxy. As in the latter, the viewer meets the lead just as he is facing his doom: Victor Ajax (Reed Birney) is a typical Coen-like irritant being dragged from his cell on his way to the electric chair.
