David Lynch: The Art Life

Jon Nguyen, Rick Barnes, Olivia Neergaard-Holm / US, DK, 2016 / 88 min.

Remarkable documentary about the usually taciturn filmmaker/visual artist David Lynch, who speaks extensively of his youth, formative years at the art academy and his early films. The ‘master of weird’ would have turned 80 this month.

David Lynch (1946-2025) was not exactly forthcoming when it came to offering interpretations of his own work or providing biographical information. In fact, Lynch was the last to answer questions about the origins, meaning and purpose of his work.

Nevertheless, documentarians Jon Ngyuen, Rick Barnes and Olivia Neergaard-Holm managed to get the usually reserved Master of the Macabre to talk. Then-seventy-year-old Lynch talks freely about his idyllic youth in provincial Missoula, Montana, and his art academy years in Philadelphia, at the time a grimy city in decline, which served as the setting for Eraserhead, Lynch's first feature film.
