De avonden
Rudolf van den Berg / NL, 1989 / 119 min.
To mark celebrated Dutch author Gerard Reve’s centenary, Eye will screen De avonden, Rudolf van den Berg’s idiosyncratic adaptation of Reve's tragi-comic masterpiece. De avonden won two Golden Calf awards for best Feature Film and Best Actor (Thom Hoffman) at the 1990 Netherlands Film Festival.

Rudolf van den Berg didn’t create a literal film adaptation of Gerard Reve’s famous debut novel about angry young man Frits Egters who, immediately after the war, is trapped by familial constraints. Frits thinks there is more to life, but he doesn’t know where.
